A favorite American summer pastime is spending time out on a lake, river, reservoir, or the ocean. Boating is fun way to spend quality time with close friends and family. But without proper safety, a good time on the water can turn into a life-changing accident.
According to the Coast Guard, 4,463 recreational boating accidents occurred in 2016. Of these accidents, there were 701 deaths; 2,903 injuries; and nearly $50 million in property damage.
Boat safety guidelines:
- Never drink alcohol while boating as it impairs judgment.
- All passengers must wear a life vest, even strong swimmers. Weather conditions change quickly on the water.
- Enroll in a boating safety course to learn vital safety information and important navigational rules.
- Be aware of the weather forecast and don’t boat in bad conditions.
- Operate the boat at a safe speed.
- Use a carbon monoxide detector because all combustible engines emit this odorless, poisonous gas that can kill in seconds.
- Make family or friends aware of your route as well as when and how long you will be on the water.
