“Help! I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” It’s more than a popular commercial slogan — it’s representative of a serious accident epidemic.
According to the National Council on Aging, one out of every three people 65 and older will become a victim of a slip and fall accident. However, it doesn’t just happen to the elderly.
Below are several tips to help people of all ages avoid a bad fall if they’re susceptible to such accidents.
Tip #1: Stay physically fit
It’s important to make exercise a regular part of your life. Walking, yoga, and other cardio workouts help you to retain good balance, coordination, flexibility, and strength — all things you need to prevent a slip and fall.
Tip #2: Avoid stairs
As you age, this is especially important. Many falls occur tripping down a flight of stairs. Ideally, a single-level home is advised for those prone to falling.
Tip #3: Manage tripping hazards
Keep your walking paths clear and be aware of cords, boxes, mats, and rugs that can cause you to slip. Pets who like to get underfoot can also be a tripping hazard.
Tip #4: Have good lighting
It’s important to be able to see correctly when you’re walking. At night, either leave on a night light or have a flashlight to illuminate your path.
Tip #5: Beware of medications
Sometimes medication can make people feel drowsy or dizzy. Monitor the medicine you take and make certain that you are aware of possible side effects.
Tip #6: Don’t be in a hurry
Often, rushing around is when people are most prone to lose their balance. If you’re in a hurry and stand up too fast, or try to walk quicker, falls can occur.
Tip #7: Consider clothing
Long hems or untied shoelaces are common trip hazards. Tripping over articles of clothing can lead to serious injury.
