Some people just can’t get enough of the sun in the summertime, but too much of a good thing can be dangerous.
Heat strokes occur at all times of the year, not just summer.
What is heatstroke?
A heat stroke happens when a person’s body temperature rises above 104 degrees while in the sun. If medical treatment isn’t immediately given, this exposure can be damaging to your heart, kidneys, brain and muscles.
If you feel like you’re becoming a little overheated, get out of the sun and hydrate yourself immediately. If you’re able, jump in the shower or even a pool to cool down your core body temperature.
There are certain groups of people who are more susceptible to heat strokes, whether by job duty or by choice.
In either case, the question remains — who’s responsible? Let’s look at a few different scenarios.
Employee vs. Employer
Employers are responsible for the wellbeing of their employees during work hours, inside and out.
Particularly for those who work outside, the employers have a legal obligation to make sure their workers are able to take breaks from the heat, stay hydrated and have proper sun protection. If a heat stroke occurs, more than likely the employee will qualify for workers’ compensation.
Kids vs. Teacher or Coaches
To tell a kid that they can’t play outside when it appears to a be nice, sunny day is sure to not go over well. It’s hard to convince them of the danger of too much sun, but adults know all too well that the danger is real.
Coaches and teachers must be diligent in making sure kids do not get overheated, even when met with puppy dog faces at the thought of giving up a recess or even when there’s a big game that the coach wants to be prepared for.
Both coaches and teachers can be held liable if a child is injured in their care.
Event Goers vs. Event Coordinators
If you attend an event that’s held outside, and this event does not have proper heat relief measures in place, the business or event coordinator may be held liable if you have a heatstroke at their event.
From tents to free water, and even those nifty misting machines, there are so many options for providing relief from the heat. This is one part of event planning that must not be overlooked.
