Risperdal is a drug that’s commonly used as an atypical antipsychotic medication to treat schizophrenia in adults as well as bipolar and irritability conditions in children and teens on the autism spectrum. Manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), Risperdal is one of their most popular drugs, generating billions of dollars in profit.
Unfortunately, this drug has significant risks. In fact, thousands of lawsuits have been filed against the manufacturer alleging long-term side effects including gynecomastia (male breast formation) and type 2 diabetes.
Currently, there are approximately 20,000 lawsuits across the United States and Canada. Each of these claims allege that Johnson & Johnson failed to warn the public about these harmful side effects.
“Many young boys reportedly grew man boobs soon after taking the powerful antipsychotic. Risperdal works by balancing the brain’s dopamine levels, which is the brain chemical directly responsible for pleasure and reward sensations.”

The FDA approved Risperdal in 1993 for the treatment of schizophrenia. Over a million prescriptions were written by 1996, but in 1999 reports began to surface regarding problems caused by Risperdal in children. The first lawsuit was filed in 2010 and thousands have followed suit.
Below are some of the worst side effects that could develop due to Risperdal usage:
- Death in people with dementia
- Strokes
- Heart failure
- Pneumonia
- Tardive dyskinesia (an often incurable disorder resulting in involuntary, repetitive body movements marked by muscle rigidity, fever, and autonomic instability)
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (a life-threatening neurological disorder)
- Fast and irregular heartbeat
