Forklifts are an amazing mechanical invention that can provide employees assistance in various work-related duties, but this machinery can also be a great danger if not safely used.
According to OSHA:
“There are roughly 85 forklift fatalities and 34,900 serious injuries each year, with 42 percent of the forklift fatalities from the operator’s being crushed by a tipping vehicle.”
Many of these accidents could be avoided if proper precaution is taken.
Examine the forklift
Before operating the forklift, examine the machine for any mechanical issues and report any issues to your boss.
Never leave a forklift unattended
Never allow forklift keys to remain in the ignition, or leave it running unattended.
Follow the lifting capacity specifications
If you lift above the weight you’re supposed to, it can be very dangerous. The freight you’re lifting could topple over or the forklift itself can tip, causing serious injury. When operating a forklift, make certain the load you’re lifting is stable, balanced, stacked evenly, and within the weight specifications.
Park forklifts carefully when not in use
The parking brake should always be applied when not in use and have the forklift should be parked out of the way from others.
Ensure proper operator training
Your employer should make certain that you’re properly trained and certified before operating the forklift. Training not only helps keep you safe, but it also protects the liability of the business so it’s in their best interests.
Be alert and attentive
Be aware of your surroundings when operating a forklift, especially people on foot. Daydreaming and not paying attention just isn’t an option.
Use seat belt
Always buckle in case the forklift tips over or collides with something.
Don’t allow others to drive
As fun as they can be to drive around sometimes, you must remember that a forklift isn’t a toy. Allowing others who aren’t certified or trained to drive the forklift asking for an accident.
Wear proper clothing
Avoid wearing loose clothing that can get caught in the gears. Always wear proper safety gear such as hard hats, sturdy foot gear, and a high visibility jacket.
