People often think that workplace injuries only occur in high risk types of jobs such as construction or manufacturing. The truth is an injury can occur at any place of employment.
According to the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health, in 2013, there were 4,585 deaths from workplace injuries and approximately 50,000 deaths from workplace exposure.
There are specific safety guidelines that industries are legally obligated to follow in order to keep their employees in a safe environment. However, there are also tips that individual workers can abide by to stay accident free.
- Keep your workspace clean and free of clutter. Many people suffer injuries from tripping over clutter in their workspace. Make sure all boxes are put up and cords are safely tucked out of the way.
- Pay attention to safety signage. Employers should post signs reminding employees of proper safety procedures in noticeable places and in spaces where those specific procedures should be practiced.
- Avoid shortcuts and don’t be in such a hurry. Trying to rush through a job can result in a serious injury because someone tried to take a shortcut when they should have.
- Always wear the proper safety equipment. Neglecting to wear a work safety harness or hard hat, for example, can mean the difference of a small injury or life threatening injury.
- Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Perhaps you feel you were not trained properly when it comes to safety on your particular job. Always ask questions of management and make certain you are 100% comfortable with feeling safe in your position.
- Stay aware of your surroundings. Always know what’s around you and be cautious anytime you’re working around things that could cause potential injury.
- Use your legs when lifting things. Many people suffer back injuries because they don’t lift properly.
- Take breaks and stretch often. This can help avoid injury by making sure you are stretched out properly and overexerting yourself.
- Take care of yourself. This includes getting plenty of rest, eating properly and exercising so that you can be the best you can be for your job.
